The 2026 Dongfeng Voyah Wuhan Open commenced on Monday evening, with a ceremony celebrating Hubei province's cultural heritage followed by an all-Chinese first-round contest at center court.

At the Optics Valley International Tennis Center, the opening featured a light show, a video inviting visitors to explore Hubei and performances inspired by the Wudang Mountains and Wuhan's zhiyin culture. Volunteers carried the participating nations' flags into the 15,000-seat stadium, where Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion, joined provincial and city officials to open the tournament.

The focus then shifted to the court, where wild card Wang Xiyu defeated teammate Wang Xinyu 6-2, 6-0 to reach the second round. The two players, who won the girls' doubles title at Wimbledon in 2018, embraced at the net after the match.

Established in 2014, the Wuhan Open is the final WTA 1000 tournament of the season, with $4.08 million in prize money. Following qualifiers on Oct 10 and 11, the 56-player singles main draw runs from Oct 12 to 18.

Three-time Wuhan champion Aryna Sabalenka heads the field, with Jessica Pegula and Iga Swiatek among the leading contenders.

Home favorite Zheng Qinwen, who became the first Chinese player to win the China Open in Beijing on Sunday, withdrew Monday, citing a right shoulder injury and fatigue. Beijing runner-up Mirra Andreeva also withdrew, citing a change of schedule.

Organizers have added three outdoor courts and around 1,500 spectator seats this year. Beyond the matches, a 10,000-square-meter carnival at the venue brings together more than 100 vendors, regional food, tennis brands, and cultural activities, with music, traditional performances, and family events planned throughout the week.

The tournament is also a centerpiece of Hubei's autumn sports and consumption campaign, which runs from September through November. Participating shopping malls around Wuhan are screening matches and offering promotions linked to tournament tickets. The campaign links Wuhan with Jingshan, another Hubei city that hosted the women's WTA 125 and men's ATP Challenger tournaments from Sept 26 to Oct 4.

Wuhan has also announced 10 million yuan ($1.4 million) in vouchers for sports-related spending, while travel packages invite fans to visit attractions ranging from the Yellow Crane Tower in Wuhan to the Wudang Mountains and the Three Gorges elsewhere in Hubei
