"These days, you've all been working hard on your reporting, often staying up late to write. How about a cup of Yunnan coffee to refresh yourselves and experience its unique flavor?" This was the warm invitation extended by Wang Ning, a deputy to the National People's Congress and Secretary of the CPC Yunnan Provincial Committee, during an open day of the Yunnan delegation at the Fourth Session of the 14th National People's Congress on March 7. His invitation was backed by the strength of Yunnan's coffee industry—built up steadily over the years.

"Yunnan coffee truly represents China." These words, spoken by Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee during his inspection in Yunnan in March 2025, still ring fresh in memory. At "Two Sessions" this year, Wang Ning elaborated on what makes Yunnan coffee emblematic of China through three concise points: Yunnan coffee has deep roots in history, being one of the earliest regions to cultivate coffee with exceptional farming practices; Yunnan coffee delivers on both quality and branding, offering a distinctive taste experience; Yunnan coffee drives income growth and sweetens lives, serving as both a thriving industry and a source of happiness.

These three “flavors” of Yunnan coffee tell a complete story—the bitterness of early struggles, the rich aroma born of perseverance, and the sweet aftertaste of improved livelihoods. The data offer clear evidence: five years ago, coffee-growing households in the province earned just over 10,000 yuan annually on average. Today, that figure has multiplied several times over, with average annual incomes now exceeding 30,000 yuan, and some households earning tens of thousands of yuan. "Our coffee farmers say that Yunnan coffee not only tastes good but also makes life sweeter and more happier," Wang added.

In fact, within a single cup of coffee lies the secret behind the rise of Yunnan’s coffee industry. While it may have been a historical coincidence that the first coffee seedlings took root in Yunnan, the industry’s transformation and its ascent onto the global stage are the results of seizing opportunities and embracing openness. Yunnan coffee sector once found itself in the awkward position of "selling a kilogram of coffee beans for less than the price of a single cup of coffee." Yet by 2024, it had emerged as a "dark horse" in the global coffee landscape, with 31.6% of its output classified as specialty coffee. This turnaround was not the work of any single government department or enterprise. Rather, it was driven by a combination of industrial policies, technological innovation, effective pest and disease control, and the cultivation of varieties suited to local conditions. Industry is the foundation of a strong province and the key to Yunnan prosperity. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021–2025), the province's coffee output value grew at an average annual rate of over 33%, reaching 99.5 billion yuan last year—poised to become a 100-billion-yuan industry.

Back in 2022, Yunnan unveiled its "Six Coffee Initiatives" to support the sector move toward specialty production and deep processing. Today, the rise of Yunnan’s coffee industry is a symphony of coordinated upgrades across the entire supply chain.

Upstream, lush coffee plantations now yield a rising share of specialty beans, with local bean supplies firmly rooting the industry in Chinese soil.

Midstream, intelligent coffee roasting lines operate at high speed, cold chain logistics networks are rapidly taking shape, and digital technologies are sharply improving production and distribution efficiency while reducing waste. Technological innovation has strengthened the industry's backbone.

Downstream, a mature omnichannel presence—integrating online platforms, offline stores, and instant retail—has taken shape. Deliveries now account for over 38% of coffee sales, while smart coffee machines, drip bags, and other innovations continue to expand consumption occasions, bringing the brew into millions of homes.

Today, Yunnan coffee, China's signature brew, is constantly pushing boundaries and reinventing itself. New formats are emerging everywhere: "camping + coffee," "road trip + coffee," "coffee + cultural tourism"—Cafés along Erhai Lake, with the Cangshan Mountains as a backdrop, have become must-visit spots for popular social media check-in spots. "Coffee + intangible cultural heritage," "creative products + coffee"—traditional crafts are finding new life amidst the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. "Coffee + fitness"—gyms now serve specialty coffee drinks, creating a whole new trend.

From the "Coffee Corridor" in Bingzhongluo, Nujiang, to the "Fire-Roasted Coffee Experience Shop" at Shuanghong Bridge in Baoshan, a single cup of coffee now connects diverse lifestyle scenes, revealing the infinite possibilities of industrial integration.

In Yunnan, beautifully designed coffee shops dot the landscape as charming sights. Some sit at the foot of snow mountains, some nestle in ancient towns, and others blend into villages for long-term stays where people settle down for a slower pace of life.
