6 killed, 4 injured in road accident in India's Bihar state

Six people were killed and four others injured critically Tuesday in a head-on collision between a car and a goods truck in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, officials said.

The accident took place on a highway in Lakhisarai district, about 150 km southeast of Patna, the capital city of Bihar.

"In a road accident today between a car carrying passengers and a truck laden with cooking gas cylinders on Sikandra-Sheikhpura highway, six people were killed on the spot, while four others were injured critically," a police official said. "The injured persons were immediately removed to the hospital."

Reports said the driver of the truck and his helper fled from the spot after the accident.

Officials said the victims were returning to their home after attending a funeral of a relative.

Deadly road accidents are common in India, often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

Around 150,000 people are killed every year in around half a million road accidents across India, officials said.

India's federal Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari recently said the government had set a target to reduce road accident deaths by 50 percent by 2024.
