The opening ceremony followed the principles of being "simple yet grand, distinctive, safe, and splendid," and highlighted "Yunnan: A Many-Splendored Life," vividly presenting Kunming's unique features as a "Lakefront Spring City Blossoming Landscape." The ceremony consisted of three parts: warm-up activities, the official ceremony, and cultural and sports performances. To achieve the effect of "turning the stands into stages," the ceremony broke with traditional stage limitations and created an innovative three-dimensional setting across the north stands, south stands, and the central infield.

Contingents from Kunming's 14 counties (cities, districts) and the Dianzhong New Area were arranged in the north stands, showcasing the achievements of Kunming's "Six Spring City" initiative through their unique regional cultural symbols. On the south stands, 12 industry-themed contingents, made up of representatives from different sectors, vividly presented Yunnan's specialty industries such as flowers, coffee, tea, fruits, medicinal herbs, and mushrooms, as well as Yunnan’s appeal as a place for travel and extended stays, as well as its ethnic culture.

As the "Spring City," Kunming made "spring" the core theme of the opening ceremony, featuring performance chapters titled "Spring Message," "Spring Breeze," "Spring Scenery," and "Spring Tide." These closely aligned with Kunming's urban characteristics, focusing on the city's ecological endowments, green industrial transformation, multi-ethnic integration, and the development vitality of its lakefront urban area. Through poetic artistic expressions, they progressively showcased Kunming's achievements in ecology, culture, and urban construction, giving the ceremony a distinct local identity of the Spring City.

During the torch relay, the opening ceremony focused on grassroots sports strength in Kunming, honoring quiet dedication at the grassroots level. Among the eight torchbearers were both local professional athletes like Olympic champion Liu Hao and physical education teacher Lou Xiaohong, who has taught for over 40 years. This segment put grassroots strivers at the center of the stage, paying tribute to sports professionals and demonstrating Kunming's commitment to nationwide fitness, inclusive sports, and its warm-hearted urban core.
