China consistently observes the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and firmly supports the cause of the UN, said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday.
Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks when meeting with Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Guyana's permanent representative to the United Nations and a candidate for the next UN secretary-general, in Beijing.
Rodrigues-Birkett said that no matter how the situation may evolve, multilateralism is not optional, but imperative for the international community.
She expressed support for the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 and said she will adhere to the one-China principle. She also hailed the four major global initiatives proposed by China and its efforts to advocate for the establishment of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization.
Rodrigues-Birkett said she will continue to push for the reform of the UN to make it more agile and efficient, to uphold fairness and justice, and to place sustainable development at the center of the international agenda.
Wang said all parties expect the next secretary-general to lead the UN in confronting difficulties and challenges, and to play the role due to the position in the cause of international peace and development.
"The UN is not perfect, but without the UN, the world will be worse," he said.
Noting this year marks the 55th anniversary of the restoration of the lawful seat of the People's Republic of China at the UN, Wang said no matter how the international situation may change, China has always been, and will continue to be a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a defender of international order.
He said China will take part in the selection of the next UN secretary-general in a responsible and constructive manner, and supports the selection of a secretary-general who will uphold the UN Charter, demonstrate outstanding competence, act with fairness and integrity, and shoulder responsibilities with commitment, in accordance with the UN Charter.
