30 old maps witness huge changes in Kunming

Maps witness trajectories of urban development. In Kunming, an elderly man collected 30 maps of the city during decades.

Zhu Yingsheng (朱映生) who was born in the 1930s opened a old paper bag showing a tourist map of Kunming in 1979.

Cinemas, museums, hospitals, post offices, hotels and shopping malls are clearly marked on the map. At that time, Wuhua and Panlong districts were the main urban areas of Kunming, and high-rise buildings and buses were rare.

Rapid changes began in 1990. The map of 1990 shows Kunming's first residential area--- Donghua Xiaoqu and the first overpass----the Xizhan Overpass as well as the New Haigeng Road (current Dianchi Road).

Zhu said that the first half of the 20th century witnessed the most rapid growth and development in Kunming. He pointed at the latest map of Kunming and said that the city has been changing just like a growing child --- Changing Every Day.

When talking about the old city of Kunming, Zhu is excited about alleys and streets. "Once upon a time, there was one street remained out of utility poles ----Tongren Street. And the widest alley was Tangzi Alley" Zhu said.

Besides old maps, Zhu has also collected a lot of "treasures", a black and white television (made in 1980), a foot operated sewing machine (1982), a handmade toon wooden wardrobe (1973), a travel suitcase (1973)……

"My children think I'm just too old fashioned and also suggest me to throw them, but I still can't bear to throw these retro products." Zhu said. (Editors: Ryan Li, Minnie Mao)
