In 1935 at Lazikou, a 17-year-old Miao soldier known as "Yunguichuan" was the first to scale the cliff, twisting leggings and vines into ropes that let his comrades reach the summit—yet he died in the fighting, leaving not even a name behind. He is a miniature of the countless unnamed heroes. At Hadapu, the Red Army found two "medicines": one grew in the soil — angelica, astragalus, and codonopsis—as medicine to cure Premier Zhou's liver ailment and restoring the soldiers' strength amid the scent of herbs; the other came from paper — the Ta Kung Pao newspaper, which delivered a significant message for Mao Zedong to decide the direction and the destination of the Long March to northern Shaanxi. Today, American professor Mahoney retraces Lazikou and Hadapu with his 18-year-old son, born of a Sino-American marriage. The Gen Z youth says: "The Long March spirit is not only exclusive to China. It also inspires everyone who chooses not to give up." History is not static; every generation walks its own Long March in its own way.
